Frequently Asked Plumbing Questions

When it comes to plumbing, it’s only natural to have questions and wonder how common issues like a blocked drain should be addressed. Here are some of the frequently asked plumbing questions that we receive and what you should do in case of a plumbing emergency.

Why does my drain get clogged?

There are a number of reasons why your drain may be getting clogged. Usually, it’s because people aren’t careful with what they’re putting down it, especially in the kitchen. However, sometimes drains can get clogged naturally over time from the build up of things like shampoo, conditioner, and hair (in the bathroom), and bits of food and oil remnants (in the kitchen). Regularly treat your drain and if ever your drain is blocked, a plumber should be your first point of call.

When should I call an emergency plumber?

Essentially, you should call an emergency plumber if ever you’re experiencing an emergency! If you’re dealing with a blocked drain, flooding, a burst pipe, frozen pipes, toilet overflow, or anything else that’s urgent and you cannot (safely) fix yourself, it’s time to call in a professional.

How often should I get my plumbing looked at?

Regular maintenance is key to keeping your plumbing system in good condition. We recommend getting your boiler serviced at least once a year, and to call out your plumber if ever there’s anything that’s amiss. Get leaky taps, clogged drains, or any other issues addressed immediately so you avoid causing permanent damage. Although something like a leaky tap may appear insignificant, this can lead to huge water bills, not to mention mold, which could eventually lead to you needing new ceilings or walls.

What should I do if my pipe bursts?

If ever you’re unfortunate enough to experience a burst pipe, call your emergency plumber immediately. If you know where your water main valve is, switch it off straight away, and try to clear away any valuables while you wait for the plumber. A burst pipe can cause serious damage and flooding so you should take action immediately.
